Abstract
Since 1970s, deinstitutionalization based on the development of antipsychotics has led the increment of fertility rate among patients with severe mental illness. Children of parents with mental illness (COPMI) show higher prevalence of mental illness and almost half of those children suffer from depression, low self-esteem, isolation, social withdrawal, aggressiveness, impaired social relationship, and attention deficit. Literature review on the program for those children in Korea shows that there are 5 articles among 1018 articles. Among these 5 included studies, one thesis is about social skill training for those children and others are reports for program in community mental health center. These reports reveal the potential harmful labeling effect and difficulty in recruiting the participants due to reluctance to disclose the mental illness of their parents, in spite of high satisfaction rate and efficacy of the programs. Against this backdrop, the mentoring program has been suggested as a safe and efficient method. Furthermore, the collaboration through the council between child welfare and psychiatric system is also needed for accessibility. In conclusion, the mentoring program, which is free from labeling effect, by youth center for those children seems to be the most promising approach for those children.
